Process of Situation: Transforming Observation

Choreo-Pedagogical Seminar with Alban Richard

Duncan Centre Conservatory, Prague
Fri–Sun 20–22 Nov 2026

The situation itself can be a resource that simply needs to be allowed to evolve. How can we remain open and receptive while this happens? The acclaimed French choreographer Alban Richard will offer tools for making choreography through observing the conditions inherent in each situation. How can we avoid rushing ahead or relying on a pre-set model or plan, and instead let ideas mature without ruling anything out? Simply uncover possibilities? Through experiments and improvisations guided by constraints based on observing bodies in motion, participants will work on trusting their own decisions and their effectiveness.

Led by leading experts

The pedagogical seminar enjoys ever-growing interest thanks to tutors such as Jean-Christophe Paré, an expert in the analysis of choreographic work, or Martha Moore, a pioneer of postmodernism. That is why our seminar offers a wealth of practical exercises. Our seminars are usually accredited by the Czech Ministry of Education (MŠMT) and every participant receives a certificate.

Combining artistic and pedagogical know-how

What makes the seminar unique is the way it brings together the experience of renowned dance artists with a pedagogical reach and the knowledge of dance teachers.

A diverse community, practical tools

The unique mix of participants, from professional choreographers to students of dance conservatories, is of great value from both an analytical-theoretical and a practical point of view. Our aim is to offer you not only theoretical teaching but above all practical skills and experience. In dance and choreography, personal experience is, after all, key.

A focus on new tools of choreographic composition

Each year the seminar introduces a new perspective on the subject, which adds to its uniqueness and topicality. We look for themes on the border between choreographic composition and dramaturgy.

Programme and content

‘As choreographers, we often find ourselves in a jungle of possibilities, looking for what has potential and what to let go of,’ says Alban Richard. In the workshop, we will also ask questions that can reveal our stereotypical patterns of creation. How does the creative process change when we disrupt these patterns, or simply choose a different terminology?

Whether you make choreography with children, students or professional dancers, gain a new way of looking at your performers, group dynamics and shared creation.

Three days of workshop – one process

From working with the body and with tools of observation, through concepts and vocabulary, to the score. The individual parts build on one another, which is why attendance of the whole seminar is required. Group dynamics are also part of the process: how we listen to each other, look at each other and respond.

Who is it for

The seminar is intended for choreographers, dancers and dance teachers, as well as students of the Duncan Centre Conservatory.

Alban Richard

Alban Richard (FR) discovered contemporary dance while studying literature and music. From the late 1990s he worked with choreographers such as Odile Duboc, Olga de Soto and Rosalind Crisp. In 2000 he founded the company Ensemble l’Abrupt, for which he has created some thirty highly diverse choreographies, always in close connection with a musical work whose structure and composition he explored in depth. His way of working, based on guided improvisations directly on stage, encourages performers to become the authors of their own dance language. A prolific choreographer, he is regularly invited to create commissioned works for ballet and dance companies in France and abroad, for example in Canada, Lithuania and Norway. From 2015 to 2025 he was artistic director of the Centre chorégraphique national de Caen en Normandie.

He has worked with SE.S.TA on several projects involving Czech choreographers (Hana Polanská, Viktor Černický, Agáta Jarošová).
