International choreographic residencies under the guidance of experimented and world-renowned coaches

Jean Gaudin, Rivca Rubin, Jean-Christophe Paré

Date of event17–24 August 2017 |  Place of eventPrague, Czech Republic

Centre for Choreographic Development SE.S.TA invites you to participate in our annual coaching residencies for choreographers

The residence’s priority is to question choreographers’ own research and lead them to look for new ways for their choreographic approach within their own work as well as to deepen their own artistic direction. The residency is conceived as a dialogue between choreographers and experienced coaches who guide them through the whole process. The workshops offer space for intense individual work while their community aspect is not to be forgotten. This is a great opportunity for networking on an international level for all.

Concept :

Participating choreographers will prepare a new choreography draft or will elaborate on an extract of already existing choreography (15 minutes maximum) that will serve as a foundation for the work during the training course. The coaches will see the basis material on a video recording beforehand so they can get acquainted with the inner world of each choreographer and understand their way of perception before the beginning of the training course. During the workshop participants will analyse individual elements of their choreographies. Furthermore they will try to define these, andtogether with their coaches re-identify what is important and what could be further developed. The results of their work will be presented to public as work in progress. The goal is to present a phase of creative process rather than a final product or whole choreography.

Coaching Residency for Choreographers is a concept that aims to enrich professional development of individual artists. It offers new opportunities to choreographers who want to profile their personal direction and helps to clarify the new paths of the artist's research. All this is achieved through a performance on the specific choreographer`s extant project with his group through his cooperation with a supervising professional coach. The role of the coach himself is to lead a dialogue with the artist, help him formulate questions, which will get answers and encourage him to discover the optimal responses and also suitable choreographic tools for his oncoming job. The coach, therefore, is in a position of a smart mirror for the artist.

In addition to collaborative work as a dancer and choreographer, he also works closely with the dance analyst Odile Rouquet in the field of research in movement. He is regularly invited to teach at various conservatoires, universities and high schools in France and abroad. In 1990 he became director of the National Centre of Contemporary Dance in Angers and then inspector of dance for the French Ministry of Culture, even later then director of the National Dance School in Marseille.
